I got Toronto on my mind

Written by Sabine Demosthenes

I’ve still got Toronto on my mind, even after a few days back to the city of a thousand church bells, Montreal.

It wasn’t my first time in the Tdot, but it was my first time alone as an adult in the city. A few days disconnecting with my usual non-orthodox routine, that is – my crazy life, and without speaking the Molière language was interesting.

Montreal does have a special European charm and a certain je ne sais quoi, but Toronto is more a cosmopolitan city, with hidden treasures to be found every few streets.

I was in Toronto especially to listen to a nice conversation.

This conversation was insightful, funny, charming and so authentic. I’m really happy to have been part of it as a listener. Especially since part of this dynamic duo is my ultimate favorite journalist and person I try to emulate the most in this kind of journalism.

He is one of the most respected men in this field.

Nick Clooney is the journalist I am talking about. I won’t deny, listening to him gave me chills. Listening to him talk about Hazim “Haz’ Avdal, a young Yazidi Iraki refugee who is like a second son to him, I saw the pride of a father whose son gave him hope to believe in goodness in people again.

Both Amal and Nick were proud family members when they spoke about Az, as well as with Nadia Murad. Nadia is a young Yazidi woman that was captured by Isis. She escaped with some scars, but that hasn’t stopped her from being the sister, the mother and the ultimate superwoman to all the Yazidis.

She is proudly fighting the good fight with her secret weapon, Amal Clooney.

Amal is more than the woman who married one of the biggest movie stars in the world and one heck of a director (come on, Good Night and Good Luck was a masterpiece).

Yes, the media talks about her latest look. I do have to admit, she mixes fun and sassiness in her look like the majority of us women in this world aim to do.

There is even a blog dedicated to her fashion sense, but my point is that even the blog dedicated to her fashion sense talks about the cause that she cherishes. I definitely have more respect for a blog like the one I’m talking about over the TMZs of the world.

Why she is more than a celebrity?

It’s because, like Audrey Hepburn, her main focus is to shine light on causes that may not been known or talked about much. It’s not be easy to have this growth in attention when only 6 years ago, she could go to eat at her favorite Italian restaurant in Notting Hill without being mobbed by a hundred photographers.

But she has a good co-pilot in George and a good family unit that will continue to be her fortress.

I came back to Montreal with a refreshing perspective on life and the act of compassion.

I didn’t think that the city of Toronto would be the type to remind me to continue being compassionate and to keep up the good fight.

Speaking of keeping up the good fight, the best boxing trainer is in Toronto! Go check him out, Jorge Blanco. If you are in Montreal, you are not forgotten. You can train here in Montreal as well.

I’m so overdue that I will give my coach a call.

In the end, Toronto and Montreal are the perfect couple (except in the NHL). They are complementary to each other.

Can we take this as an example and be more complementary to each other as human beings, especially with regard to compassion and human decency?

I did see it last weekend in the Tdot!

Boss Ladies

I couldn’t wait to buy the first Elle Magazine under Garcia’s leadership yesterday. I was literally like a little child in a candy store!

It’s a brand new era for women all around the world. We want to stand up for each other by supporting each and everyone of us (in both small and big ways).

Her editorial was raw and real.

Why “raw”, do you ask?

She wasn’t shy to mention that she was devastated when she was dismissed as ELLE’s fashion director. But, she never settled. Her creativity and determination is refreshing and we can feel it while reading her first essay as the new Editor-in-Chief.

Nina Garcia

I have always been an ELLE lady over a Vogue one. I want to learn more about a woman’s journey rather than looking a thousand pages of publicity.

I love fashion, but I love having some discussion or an interview mixed in. A worldly, fashionable and intelligent woman can read about the next trend and discover the journey of a courageous woman, all in the same magazine.

Nina Garcia is the right woman to take Elle into a new era!

Nina Garcia Quote

I was happily surprised to discover Katrina Lake, the founder and CEO of Stitch Fix (please come to Canada!!). We are the same age and her path to become one of the most promising entrepreneurswasn’t smooth for her, but she never gave up and she made it.

I was so inspired by the end of this article that I actually got the little boost of confidence that I needed. I’m crossing my fingers that Stitch Fix could deliver to Canada.

Katrina Lake

Hmm, maybe I should suggest it.

I saw a nice ad featuring Coco Rocha. I just love this beautiful human being. Her positivity, her spirituality and her just beautiful nature is so nurturing.

I kept smiling while slowly turning the pages.

And then, the main event – La pièce de résistance!

A sit down interview, or should I say a conversation, between two people who were reconnecting while talking about International Women’s Day, the Climate Summit, their children (and grandchildren for John Kerry), violence against women and the willingness to make our voices heard as individual, especially right now in 2018.

Angelina Jolie and John Kerry

This is the best issue I have read in 2018 so far!

The pictures were perfect and so were the articles such as “The Hero We Need”, referring of the Black Panther movie, Ava DuVernay’s “Women in Hollywood” article and Teddy Quinlivan’s essay on being a beautiful transgender model.

Teddy is wow!! She is fearless.

It was a beautiful March issue that I will cherish in my collection.

I can’t wait to see what Nina will show us in April.

When Harry met Meghan

You probably know by now that HRH Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are engaged (yeah).

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle engagement

I wasn’t very surprised about this news but I was so happy for the couple. Actually, any happy couple that is happy and in love, I am so happy for them. In that last sentence, I wrote the word happy 4 times!! It is refreshing to write this word.

Back to the happy couple.

They represent our generation. I really don’t understand the fascination with the fact they are an interracial couple. What’s the deal. We are in 21st century people. Why can’t “the media” concentrate on the fact that they are two caring, humanitarians that happened to have met on a “blind date”, clicked, connected and fell in love?

In Canada, I haven’t read much about this fact, but in The States and in The UK, I witnessed that there is still some work to be done regarding discrimination and racism.

Their joint interview with the remarkable journalist Mishal Husain, “career goals”, was like having dinner with friends that are telling you oh my god we are engaged!!” They were happy, nervous in a good way, chatty, loving, and funny.

Funny Prince Harry and Meghan

I really was so damn happy when they spoke as a team. They want to conquer the world as a team. They are not afraid of humanitarian work, or of being the people’s Prince and Princess with a twist.

For us, Meghan is our home girl because she spent so much time in Toronto (except I’m from Montreal, but close enough) and she has really shown that she can integrate herself easily with some help of her friends of course.

I always enjoyed her blog, The Tig, because she was a foodie, she enjoyed fashion, and she didn’t take herself too seriously. It was an inviting blog. Another aspect that I integrated into The Chronicle, it was so important to me.

She is another woman that I thought hmm, she is easy-going,and chill like me and a few of my girlfriends, with this fire in her eyes to fight (like Angelina) the good fight, no matter what.

Meghan Markle Vanity Fair

They are both lucky to have found each other and with HRH Prince William and The Duchess of Cambridge, we may see a new era ladies and gentleman. I think they could bring out the best of one another all together.

Prince Harry and Meghan are in love and they are ready to rock this world. We so need this right now. The sky seems less grey suddenly. I will follow their charities closely and maybe (I got nothing to loose), one day, I could interview them.

Alright, alright…

You are all laughing and rolling your eyes.

You never know!

Like the two of them, they probably didn’t know they would find each other and realize they found their perfect partner.

In British Royal history, we do know of some couples that were deeply in love, but couldn’t be together because of Royal protocol and the timing wasn’t right. In 2017, we are witnessing a new mentality in the royal family. We all had previous relationships that didn’t work out and maybe we got married and unfortunately, a divorce was the solution. Again, kept reading about how Meghan was married and she is now a divorcee.

So what?

What matters most is the personality of the person, the fact that she has her heart in the right place. Let them enjoy this happiness and be supportive, like we are supportive to our friends that may follow the same path. The only difference is that your friends are not part of the biggest royal family of all time.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle

It’s our time, as a generation, tojoin them in bringing in a new chapter into this story called LIFE.

Love is all you need

Beautiful Olivia

I remember the first time I saw Olivia Harrison and it’s seem it was like yesterday… It was when I first saw the videoclip ”Real Love ”from The Fab Four on tv.

I saw how lovingly she was looking at her husband. The kindness of this look was a beautiful thing to witness.

To me, Olivia is a warrior. A warrior of her husband’s legacy. A warrior of bringing light into the hearts of many people with The Material World Foundation.

Olivia Harrison and Shankar Family

I really admire her humility. If you haven’t had the chance to watch ”The Leaving in a Material World” documentary she co-produced with Martin Scorsese, it really is one of the best documentaries you will see. Especially if you are a fan of George Harrison or even if you are a fan of watching documentaries.

She was blunt but delicate. There is no bullshit with Olivia and I love it when someone doesn’t take any crap. In 1999, she was clearly was a fearless warrior when that horrible home invasion happened.

This week, the Thursday Maestro goes to this wonderful lady who is contributing, in her own way, to making the world a better place with her philanthropy, her spirituality, and her gentle soul.

Peace.

One of my favorite song

Smile

Light up your face with gladness
Hide every trace of sadness
Although a tear may be ever so near
That’s the time you must keep on trying
Smile what’s the use of crying
You’ll find that life is still worthwhile
If you’ll just

A feel good Chronicle today about some people that put a smile upon my face and it will be contagious.

Some of them I discover them on Instagram, others are friends, one is a scientist and one is a humanitarian.

They have this spark for this thing that we call life and they want to make the most of it.

Speaking of sparks, I really enjoy Tala’s Instagram. She is fun, very creative and full of life.

The creative soul

Sometime, you get a glimpse of her bags that she is creating. I can’t wait to buy one of her bags. She is one cool and happy human rock and roll, enfant terrible, totally awesome woman.

Totally rock n roll

This man is a man with a mission. For me,he is my uncle from another mamma.

Emmanuel Dubourg with the Prime Minister Trudeau

He loves his constituents and the feeling is mutual.

Every time I meet him at  his Montreal office or at a quartering, he have the biggest smile in his face. He is genuinely a really good person. I’m hoping to be half the person he is! Merci Emmanuel!

Emmanuel Dubourg

She have a heart of gold and for me, she is more than a big movie star. She is a woman that is not afraid like many others womens I admire for fighting the good fight.

Beautiful moment

She didn’t have it easy like the majority of us. She never surrender her fights  for the rights of the refugees, the children, womens and many more. Inspirational, human, not perfect, authentic and a kind spirit.

That’s Angelina Jolie.

I really admire Laurent Duvernay-Tardif. He was playing for the Redmen of McGill with my favorite number 27. Now, he is playing for the Chiefs of Kansas City for the NFL. He studies in Medecine at the McGill University and you can feel his desire to be a good doctor when it will be time for him to put lab coat.

Dr. Duvernay-Tardif

Another person that got a heart of gold. He just create a beautiful foundation that want young kids and teenagers get more active.

It’s a beautiful mission that I will talk a little bit more on a different post maybe with Laurent. We never know. Genuine athlete, genuine doctor and genuine human being.

Happy

Laurent and the Rock Dwayne Johnson have this same authenticity with people!

Dwayne Johnson

And this young man.

Le Bel Garçon

We will have an exclusive interview this week on The Chronicle with Ralph Jusma aka Bel Garçon (meaning in English beautiful boy like his sweet mamma used to call him). He is a well known music promoter in Montreal. His charm, his wit, his sense of humor and his undying love for music is contagious.

Let’s smile, let’s smile, let’s be creative and let’s be happy this week.
